Canadian Influences on American Culture

December 5th, 2010

Very few countries that share borders also share as much in common culturally as do Canada and the United States of America. The most obvious cultural common ground between the two countries is our use of the English language, although many parts of Canada also rely on French as the main form of communication.

But our common traits run much deeper than just language, and in many cases Canadian influences on American culture are just as profound as the other way around.

Far too often, the U.S. is presented as the more influential when it comes to cultural trends in North America; and, while it’s true that Americans often are the instigators of many cultural phenomenons that eventually blaze a trail across the world, Canadian influences can sometimes be just as consequential and far-reaching as those from its friends to the south.

Because of its massive amount of natural forests, wildlife and gorgeous geography, Canada and its citizens are sometimes credited with being leaders on the world stage when it comes to promoting a culture of nature conservation and appreciation.

The many examples of gorgeous, pristine and untouched Canadian wilderness areas act as an inspiration to many other countries, such as the United States, that are trying to conserve their own natural resources while they still meet a demanding and expanding urban populace.

Without a doubt, Canadians have been successful in melding the urban lifestyle with the wilderness in a way that diminishes neither their gorgeous natural resources nor the effectiveness of their cities. Canada is truly a country that has successfully integrated bustling metropolises into the surrounding beauty of the natural landscape, and as such stands as a great motivator for other countries of the world looking to do the same.

On another front, Canadians have also distinguished themselves as producers of some of the finest artists, actors, singers and performers in the world, as well. Many American movie fans are often surprised to discover that some of their favorite actors and actresses are not, in fact, Americans at all, but rather Canadians.

From great comic actors to award-winning dramatists, Canada has been home to countless performers whose styles and body of work have influenced entertainment culture all around the world. Canadian singers and songwriters, too, are often every bit as popular in America, and more than a few have risen to the top of the charts both in the U.S. as well as around the world.

Once again, many American music enthusiasts are often surprised when they discover that some of their most beloved artists are either Canadian or have some significant Canadian influences on their body of work.

Far too often, America’s neighbors to the north are under-appreciated for their contributions to world culture, entertainment, technology, art, literature and environmentalism. Canadians have a unique cultural tradition of their own, and they have much to be proud of in countless areas.

Mayan Culture and History

November 30th, 2010

Culture

Why one of the greatest civilizations on earth collapsed is a mystery. From about 2000 BC until 1500 AD, the area it occupied was very large, extending all the way from modern New Mexico south to Honduras, El Salvador, most of Guatemala, and Belize. Enormous temples, pyramids and cities still inspire awe in tourists who visit the ruins. It made up a very complex social and political order. Tikal, Guatemala, is a good place to see the details of this culture, which excelled in so many different fields. It’s at Tikal where you can see evidence of the culture’s extraordinary achievements.

Today’s descendants are called the Indigenous and make up more than 50% of the population of Guatemala. Currently, the culture thrives and is vibrant. The women and children wear traditional dress that reflects their own region. Weaving was always a part of the culture and it survives today and is famous all over the world.

The huipils (blouses) range from lightweight fabric with embroidery around the neck and sleeves to heavily embroidered garments that are worn as coats in the chilly mountain areas. Knowledge of the various regions is needed to identify the patterns and colors. When they all come together as they do at the markets, a field of wildflowers is not more colorful or beautiful. Antique huipils sometimes bring very high prices.

They also create baskets and pottery. Their carved wood animals, saints, and chests are treasured by tourists and collectors. The market at Chichicastenango is alive and swarming with vendors and visitors every Thursday and Sunday. Not too far from Lake Atitlan, another, more typical Mayan market can be found.

History

This civilization, the best-known of the classical ones of Mesoamerica, originated in the Yucatan in 2600 BC or thereabouts. By AD 250, they had become prominent in what is now southern Mexico, Guatemala, western Honduras, El Salvador, and northern Belize.

Foundational civilizations were the Olmec and others, and the Mayans went on to develop such things as astronomy, a calendar, and hieroglyphics. They have left relics of elaborate, highly-decorated ceremonial architecture that continues to draw tourists from around the world. Examples of their architecture can be seen in temple-pyramids, elaborate palaces, and observatories, all built with no metal tools.

The Mayans were also successful at farming. They cleared huge sections of tropical rain forests, erecting large underground reservoirs to store rainwater for their fields. They developed extensive trade routes to market their products.

It’s generally believed that the first ancestors came across the Bering Strait at least 20,000 years ago. These people were nomadic and were hunter-gatherers. Settlements in Mexico were in the Archaic period from 5000 to 1500 BC. In these settlements, corn was cultivated and basic pottery and stone tools were created and used.

In the pre-classic period around 1500 BC to 300 AD, the Olmecs put together what is considered the first true civilization in this ethic group. They settled on the Gulf Coast, but not much is known about them. The relationship between the Olmecs and the Mayans is not clear, whether the Mayans were their descendants or only trading partners. It is clear, however, that the Mayan calendar and hieroglyphics are based on Olmec versions.

The Classic Period, from 300-900 was the time of the most artistic and cultural achievement. The society was arranged according to class and profession. Governments were centralized with a king at the head and boundaries were distinctly defined.

Major cities of the Classic Period were Tikal in Guatemala; Palenque and Yaxchil in Chiapas, Mexico; and Cop and Quirigua in Honduras. There was a decline in the 9th century of population centers in the central lowlands. It is believed that famine, drought, trade interruptions, and a breakdown of the political structure brought on this decline. What followed were urban centers that sprang up in the Northern Yucatan.

The Post-Classic Period from 1000 to 1500 AD saw war between rival Mayan groups; and by the Post Columbian Period, the Spaniard were invading. The Mayans were slaughtered by the invading Spaniards, but the real killers were the European diseases. Miraculously, some Mayans have survived until today, and the culture has remained amazingly intact. Many still speak their own language but most are able to speak Spanish as a second language.

Constructive Elements Of American Culture

November 4th, 2010

Constructive elements of the US culture and American characteristics separate American society from Europe and other world countries, even American neighbors. This distinction becomes clearer with comparison of America and Canada. Both countries were established by European migrants, but Canadian culture has more similarity with European culture. In one hand, American culture is consequence of reaction and interaction between European cultural elements and American geography. On other hand, contact between different cultures of European and non- European culture, particularly African culture. America ethnicity is collection of many migrants ethnic. It is mix of diversity race and ethnic. Plurality and unity is one of important element of American culture.

Emerging of national identity and culture shaped before people conscious. Collection of values system, norms, history, geography, and immigration created a new way of life that I called American culture. American society is like a pot that various things were added and out put of this pot has principle difference with primary things. As a result, understanding American culture and society needs to studding of human process and geography parallel European culture.

When we talk about American culture, values, or specific manners, we mean values, manners, and characters of white mid-class. However, we should emphasis to mid-class in American cultural studies. American culture has constructed of five main elements; 1- individualism and equality 2- immigration and cultural disturbance 3- American-African race and American culture 4- Puritanism 5- expansionism.

Individualism and equality are to element that sometimes seem antonym, and sometimes complementary to each other. Nonetheless, they create significant part of American culture and identity. Both of them have had many agreements and critiques in American history. Many scholar emphases to individualism and equality, these are important constructive elements of culture, society, and government in the United States of America.

Alexis de Tocqueville believes that individualism is avoidable result of equality and democracy. Because, every person in equal circumstances follows their ideas, in this situation, all of their sentiments concentrate only on their interests. Individualism differs from the selfishness.
Individualism is visible in many layers of American society and history. American society and land mixed with individualism. Individualism was the pattern of rural settlement, that in which one house located among miles of lands and separated from others houses and villages. Individualism has effected in shaping of American cities. Also, individualism is observed in American high education system and religious patterns.

These were positive aspects of American individualism. But without doubt, it has negative aspects; inattention to keeping the structure and form of city, leaving the farm lands and old buildings without attention to environment problems and immigration to original lands, inattention to poor peoples. According to these issues, uncivilized individualism was being popular.
Before Discovering American Continent by European Adventures, there were several ethnics, but after that some ethnics added them, and after two centuries American became a multi- ethnic continent. Then United States declared independency, and frequently expended to his original territory by war, purchase, annexation. But principle source of variety had been immigration from any where, especially Europe. Potential of this people to acceptance other culture created one of significant constructive of American culture and identity. America is a territory that its history derivates its people from having a common forbears.

Hector St. John de Crevecouer in his book, “letters from an American Farmer” (1782), mentioned that “I can indicate a family that their grand father is from England with Poland’s woman, his son got married with a French girl, and their four sons got married with four diverse nations. He is an American, who left his traditional behaviors and prejudices, and choused new behaviors and ideas. These treatments, ideas originate from new way of life, government, and social positions. Here, individuals from any nations melting within a new race that in future their attempts will bring important changes in globe”.

Revolutionary war led to American independency. It was first successful anti-colonial attempt in contemporary history. Winners built a nation that had not the common, conventional pre- conditions of nation-building. United States had not natural territory, history with unique religion versus European countries. There weren’t Narrative, ancient poem, folklores, and forefathers of one race.

Since the begging of immigration to United States, English’s were major group and cant ignore significant of English language, English law, religious ideas, thinking, theoretical and thinking ideals and principles of English in construction of America and American culture. In spite of these issues, English race don’t account native race of American people. English were half people that lived in America in 1790 and African were second category with 20 percent. Answer of constructors of this new country was ideological. They introduced American as new human beings who created based on new ideas, new principles, and new thinking methods. However it was an only way to state about this young country in world.

Traditional pattern for allocating the American-African history is a route from bandage to freedom. Some historians like Nathan heukinze believe that pattern of continued campaign for representing the historic experience of American blacks. History and race relationship of American-African investigate not only considering political, economical, and social situation, but through expand cultural perspective. Establishing modern and global slavery system differed by place, time, race background and European or African formation. In eighteenth century, North American colonies had more population of slavery. Main question is that how the very variety of African people with different believes, behaviors, and language could create the society and culture of modern black world.

First slavery group including twenty Africans entered to James town port with a Poland’s ship in 1619. Frequently blacks added to other immigrations in North America, especially Virginia, South coralline and Georgia that had very emergence need to labors.
